What LiDAR is
What LiDAR is

A LiDAR payload fires laser pulses and records returns as a dense 3D point cloud. Intensity and multiple returns help separate vegetation from surface, but the deliverable is measurable geometry, not a material class or a heat map.

Where photogrammetry needs clear line of sight to the surface, LiDAR punches through gaps in vegetation so you can model terrain, corridors and stockpiles that RGB alone misses.

Pulse, range and returns
Pulse, range and returns

Higher pulse rates shorten usable range. Lower rates stretch detection distance. Multiple returns and smaller spot sizes put more ground points under canopy when the flight plan matches the site.

On Zenmuse L3 we match rate and scan mode to corridor length, RMSE and vegetation so you do not burn batteries chasing range you cannot use.

Vegetation and corridors
Vegetation and corridors

Australian corridor survey, mine faces and vegetation-covered sites are the usual LiDAR jobs. Wire and ground together, volumes on faces, and terrain under sparse canopy are where LiDAR earns the kit.

Open-sky colour texture still belongs to photogrammetry. Many programmes fly both and merge products downstream.

Aerial vs handheld
Aerial vs handheld

Zenmuse L3 on Matrice 400 covers roofs, spans and open terrain with RTK-georeferenced clouds. SHARE C1 / C1 Pro handheld SLAM covers plant rooms, under-structure and GPS-denied detail.

We commission both in the same coordinate frame when the contract needs aerial and walk-in products together.

Live and preview clouds are for field QC. Survey-grade L3 products need offline reconstruction in DJI Terra with accuracy optimisation. Handheld SLAM follows the SHARE processing path you invoice.

We wire export into your CAD or GIS stack at handover. Same engineers stay on support after commissioning.

Outcome

What you walk away with

You leave with a LiDAR path matched to the aircraft or handheld programme, Terra or SLAM presets for the deliverable you invoice, and Australian warranty from the same team that confirmed fitment.

Questions, answered

Choosing

LiDAR or photogrammetry for my site?
Photogrammetry when the surface is open and you need colour texture. LiDAR when vegetation or thin features block a clean surface model. Many programmes fly both.
When does Zenmuse L3 make sense?
When you need longer-range aerial LiDAR, stronger canopy penetration, or survey-grade vertical accuracy at higher AGL on Matrice 400. Choose L3 when the tender asks for LiDAR density, wire detection or terrain under canopy that imagery alone cannot deliver.
When do I pick SHARE C1 Pro instead?
When the job is walk-in SLAM: interiors, under-structure, plant rooms and GPS-denied detail. Full handheld ladder lives under Handheld. This Sensors lane surfaces C1 / C1 Pro so aerial and walk-in programmes stay visible together.
Where does LG30 fit?
LG30 is a compact multi-function laser mapping path when the brief fits that platform. Tell us the accuracy and aircraft constraints; we will say if L3 or handheld is the better primary.

Buying

What does Zenmuse L3 cost in Australia?
From $21,890 AUD on this page. Kit price depends on Matrice 400, batteries, Care and processing seats. Ask for a configured quote.
Can I demo density before buying?
Yes. Book a workflow review. Bring corridor length, required RMSE and whether you need DOM and DEM in one flight. We would rather prove density on a real brief than sell a sensor that sits unused.

Compatibility

Which aircraft does L3 fit?
Matrice 400 only, on the Zenmuse L3 single gimbal connector on the E1 port. If you are still on Matrice 350, we map whether an M400 plus L3 programme fits your jobs.
Will this fit Matrice 350?
L3 does not. Selected other LiDAR paths may. We confirm mount, power and weight against your airframe before quoting.

Accuracy

What vertical accuracy can I expect?
Brochure RMSE assumes survey workflow, control and processing you actually run. Under DJI lab conditions L3 quotes centimetre-class vertical RMSE at typical survey altitudes. Real Australian sites vary with vegetation and GNSS. We validate against your check-shot network on commissioning.

Workflow

What software do I need?
L3 point-cloud processing is available in DJI Terra (confirm your build). Handheld SLAM uses the SHARE path you licence. We cover export into CAD or GIS at handover.
Can we merge aerial LiDAR with handheld scans?
Yes. RTK-georeferenced L3 clouds register with SHARE C1 or C10 when both workflows are commissioned together. Tell us the contract deliverable and we wire both paths.

Support

What warranty and support do I get?
A 12-month warranty backed by Australian Consumer Law, with support from our Melbourne team. The same engineers who commissioned the stack stay on the phone. DJI Care Enterprise is available where eligible.
Next step

Not sure which kit you need?

Tell us the job. survey, inspection, mapping, or scanning and we'll spec the right platform, payload, and RTK setup. No guesswork.

We usually reply within a day.
